This meet-up will explore how we can take portraits using natural light and backgrounds. We will explore how to recognise appropriate light and how to manipulate it whilst shooting in a less controlled environment than a studio. We will explore how we can work collaboratively with our subject to achieve a portrait that captures their personality and style. We will also look at posing and setting your subject at ease. Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Canberra.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

The event was good, exactly what I needed. I've been feeling a bit stuck with my photography and needed an excuse to get out and change things up to try something different. I like that the meetup was relaxed and flexible and didn't try to force people into doing one thing or another, people could follow whatever creative inspiration they had at the time. It was also good timing to be shooting in the two hours before sunset, definitely the best time to be out shooting with a nifty fifty.

Loved it! I was great to join a group of likeminded photographers and the instructor was really helpful making useful suggestions and assisting where he could. It felt like a safe way to get out in public and take photos.

The 25th March hosted the Easter full moon for 2024. At this time we also had a penumbral lunar eclipse. The eclipse would reportedly make one edge of the moon darker than the other however I found this hard to see. This image was taken with my Nikon Z8 and my180-600mm lens at 560mm. Exposure factors were 1/320sec, f/6.3, iso 64. Processed in Lightroom and a filter was added in Topaz studio for a fun special effect.

As the sun was dipping below the horizon, I captured this stunning display of colours and the crisp circle in the vibrant sky during my sunset walk on a warm Autumn day. The autumn hues of dried grass and the warmth of the sunlight along with the smokey sky complemented each other. The silhouette of gumtrees, the long rustic fence and faraway mountains created a rural atmosphere.Device: Canon EOS R6F number: f/22Exposure time: 1/20

An image I've wanted to capture for sometime. So I headed to Lake George and waited patiently for the moon to rise. The reflection on the water was amazing so I decided to darken the image to highlight the glow of the moon and did a composite image.

There were a lot of promising looking clouds in the sky, and we set off for Mulligan's Flat in time for the sunset. We weren't disappointed. This is one of Canberra's best iconic photo beauty spots and is looking at its glorious best at the moment. A bit of enhancement using the Adamski Effect.

Thank you for the consideration. Background to this photo.A couple of years ago on our local community page I saw a photo of a tree covered in bioluminescent fungi saying it was found in Gerroa, 5 minutes drive from me. Wow how amazing, so I set out to find it and photography it too. Since then I developed an interest in fungi and look forward to Autumn when there is plenty about. To enable me to photograph ghost fungi ( omphalotus nidiformis) I go for a bush walk during the day mostly

Mesa Arch is about a 25 minute walk from the parking lot in Canyonland National Park. At night, it's the darkest sky I've ever seen. This photo represents 20 stacked images of the Milky Way combined together in Starry Landscape Stacker. The result required the scene to be slightly brightened in post to bring out the foreground.
